Pizza at Malee’s Cafe – the way it should be!

Malee’s Cafe might ring a bell for many if they are avid pizza lovers and actually make it a point to devour pizza on a regular basis. Malee’s has an extensive menu covering a wide variety of dishes ranging from BBQ, to continental. But the menu intentionally leans towards an entire section devoted just to pizzas, which of course happens to be their specialty.

Their pizzas are rich in flavor with just the right amount of cheese oozing between the toppings. Malee’s pizzas come as a fresh breath of air amid the typically oily and desi-styled pizzas currently on a rampage in the country. The deep pan crust has a nice homemade touch to it and is not too fluffy with just the right level of crispiness. The fruits, veges and meat all have an equal part to play in their delectable toppings, with not one completely overpowering the other. This great balance is what makes these pizzas stand out.

Chaaye (tea) like never before!

Tossdown had the most exquisite and unique experience at Islamabad’s very own Chaaye Khana (tea-house), some days back. As the name “tea-house” suggests, the menu is bombarded with hundreds of flavors of tea with only a few carefully selected delectable savories. On our previous visit we only managed to get hold of the cafe’ details all the while saying to ourselves; “hmmm nice place, we should have it on tossdown”. So this time when our tossdown team was in Islamabad, Chaaye khana was an obvious destination after a hearty lunch.

Chaaye Khana

The best Tea in town!

The first thing to notice when you enter is the aesthetic mounting of tea canisters on the wall – ‘nicely done’. The place also had a library of sorts and an interior separated by a semi circled book case that has seating on either side. We sat in the only place available at the corner infront of an English fireplace. It made us wonder if that fireplace actually worked or not. The mystery casually revealed itself when we caught sight of the slightly emerging black tar on wall. Imagine coming here in winter, faces aglow with the warm hue of the fireplace and sipping delicious tea. Great, another excuse for a future visit!

Getting down to business, we asked the courteous waiter to help us with the order and he confirmed Roasty Almond and Mint & Lemon was a good way to start. Even the most exquisite tea is incomplete without some goodies or dessert to munch on. So we ordered a Walnut Toffee, again highly recommended by the waiter and proclaimed as the best dessert  on the menu *thumbs up*.

While our camera left no nook or corner of the cafe’ unexplored, the aromatic aroma of the tea house simply took our breath away. Never before was sipping tea in the afternoon such a royal experience! The tea arrived in the most contemporary and beautiful kettle we had ever seen. A kettle like that would make you want to have tea all day long..no exaggeration! Really impressive.

Roasty Almond was pink and the mint was obviously green. We poured our respective kettles and assured each other about the greatness of this tea. Beautiful flavor and gorgeous fragrance. And yes the walnut dessert was one of the best desserts we have had during our dessert hunting across cities.

To sum it up, Chaaye Khana has a great ambiance, amazing tea & goodies, and is good on the pocket as well. This place is a ‘must-go’ if you are visiting Islamabad and if you are already a faithful Isloo resident and still have not been here, you need to seriously consider changing cities.

Their tale has been told and devoured since time immemorial; for these are the best of buddies forever enjoined in a delectable duo of sugary and sweet-smelling  confections. The exact origin of these two wondrous treats is yet to be discovered, but many countries and cultures including Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Turkey, Iran, Bangladesh etc. are avid devotees.

These two are notoriously known and loved for their delicious taste despite the caloric overdose. Their camaraderie surpasses borders and cultures and Halwa without its counterpart Puri is like tea without sugar; it just won’t do! An overtly jealous intruder, Aloo Cholay (Spicy Potatoes & chick peas and various herbs)  continues to butt in with its enticingly spicy and flavorful existence. After years of struggle, it has gained reputation as the loyal sidekick whenever there is talk of halwa-puri on the breakfast table. Although some people believe that the Aloo Cholay clan lacks that special something and will never be able to completely break the spell of the fellowship its superheroes enjoy. Mr. Aloo Cholay , you will just have to find contentment in being the faithful sidekick. As for the rest of you,  next time you are eating out with friends celebrating friends day, why not pay tribute to one of the oldest buddies this side of the planet has known?

Unhinge those imaginative screws and behold a spectacular sight for your eyes and ears.  A surge of candy colored balloons strikingly aligned as far and as high the eyes can see; Tossdown flyers and banners engulfing everything with absolutely no mercy; an ebullient lot of youngsters bringing down the house with music, fun and frolic; A delectable streak of food kiosks brought directly from favorite eateries of the city……… That is just a glimpse of what the Tossdown Food-Tech Fiesta 2011 was all about.

pre-fiesta tasks!

pre-fiesta tasks!

The idea hatched some time ago when Tossdown management began thinking of ways to create some waves in the city. An activity planned to bring tossdown fans and of course the not-so-acquainted-with- tossdown people, all under one roof. That part was figured out, but the next crucial steps were kind of hazy so further deliberation finally led to a series of exciting activities the fiesta would cater to. The enthusiasm was contagious and within no time we had the entire plan chalked out eagerly awaiting its implementation.  A separate team was established and tasks were divided. It was like a war zone (but of course far friendlier and with no bloodshed) where the tossdown soldiers readily expected their assignments.

The event was to be held in one of Lahore’s well known shopping malls; Siddiq Trade Center.  Appropriate people were hooked up for event management, music & entertainment, media and most importantly FOOD. Tossdown partners such as Dominos Pizza, Dunkin Donuts, Ze Grill, Maisonette, Subway among others were to put up their designated kiosks and engage people through a multitude of mouthwatering giveaways. This was also a platform for newbies such as Souled Cakes, which gained commendable acclaim for its scrumptious cakes and pastries. In the line of spectacular innovation is another brand worth mentioning at the fiesta; Comet Lamps. These lamps are exquisitely designed and intricately weaved together in the shape of a comet, and come in every possible color on the planet! All in all an eye catching item guaranteed to give that extra panache to your decor.

great fun at the tossdown fiesta!

After a long stretch of back breaking work and sleepless nights, we were ready to roll. On the morning of the event our minds filled with keen anticipation, as we put on our tossdown T’s and headed out hoping for a spectacular 3-day extravaganza.   The balloons and thingamajigs had all been stunningly arranged. Like any big event, the finishing touches were ongoing till the very last minute. Gradually people began pouring in. Initially it was mainly the shopping mall shoppers and by standers who’s curiosity led them to the ground floor, where the heart of the fiesta was; while the rest of the floors had the restaurant booths. As excitement grew, so did the number of people. Fun competitions were held throughout the evening where people were given awesome giveaways and freebies including food vouchers, coupons and yes ladies, …even gold jewelry!  Day one ended on a happy note of delightful entertainment and free culinary delights! Day two and three followed with high expectations considering the decent turnout on the first day.  And tell you what, it all went way beyond our expectations! To our utmost delight, the event specifically attracted families that are always in the lookout for pleasurable pursuits but usually fail to find any.  Kids and women of all ages were glued to their chairs on one side of the stage, fervently looking forward to the lineup of activities. Various television channels ventured on to introduce tossdown as one of the leading eatout portals of the country. Battle of the Bands was a noticeable highlight where young singers and musical bands were given the opportunity to perform amid a live hyperactive audience. Dancing prodigies were introduced whose incredible contemporary dance techniques left us all in awe.

Those wonderful three days flashed by in a jiffy leaving us all energized with an apparent overdose of toss-renaline (tossdown adrenaline;) ). The fiesta successfully helped us achieve our desired result which was to stir up the city with some tossdown awareness and at the same time introduce the people of Lahore to worthwhile free entertainment that has the essential ingredients for any successful event; food, music & free giftssss!! And the best part is that the fiesta has just marked the beginning of an exhilarating and enjoyable journey of events for people who believe in good, clean entertainment.

Breakfast just isn’t like it used to be….!

Tags

About a decade ago, going out for breakfast for Pakistanis meant only one thing; stuffing themselves with delicious traditional breakfast cuisines! Desi favorites ranging anywhere from crispy fried puris, to sugary sweet halwas; From savory herbed channas (chickpea curry) and pickled aaloo bhaaji(pickled potatos with herbs ) to paaye (goat feet curry), nihaari (beef curry) with fluffy soft naans (bread), and refreshing lassi (yogurt & milk drink)… ! These majestic recipes are part of our culture and will always be an essential part of who we are.

Back then no one could imagine going out in the morning just to eat bread and eggs. Fortunately, with the evolution of media and internet, cross-cultural transitions, eating trends have also taken a 180 degree turn.  It’s not just the five star hotels that offer authentic English breakfasts. Days of conventional breakfast menus are long gone. Now we have the luxury to choose from breakfast platters categorized as English breakfast, American breakfast, individual servings of omelets, pancakes, waffles and sidelines including croissants, sausages and hash-browns! You can also try out some appetizing bread baskets of sorts, enticing flavors of tea and coffee, fresh fruits & juices and well just about the whole  breakfast caboodle!

Breakfast as World Fashion Cafe

Top ranking breakfast hangouts in Lahore are of course the much coveted Coffee Tea and Company (CTC) and Espresso. Restaurants rapidly gaining momentum in this delectable race are English Tea House & World Fashion Café. Coffee lovers plan out their Sunday mornings in eateries like Gloria Jeans Coffees and Espresso Coffee House  just to smell that wonderful aroma of coffee beans coupled with freshly baked muffins.

Weekends are now looked forward to with invigorated excitement because going out for breakfast with friends and family  has become a pleasant-tasting experience. With doctors forever stressing about the importance of breakfast and how its the most essential meal of the day, the increasing popularity of these breakfast joints ought to bring some relief for our doctors now wouldn’t you say?

its raining pakoras and samosas!!!!

Citizens of Lahore need an excuse to  eat. And what better way than to indulge in specialties apt for respective seasons of the year.  Soothing our scorching summers with bundles of cold mangoes, Bidding farewell to chilly winters with hot, sweetly scented halwas …. oh well the list is a long one and demands an article on its own. With monsoon rains crashing down like candy from a broken piñata, its again time for the people of Lahore to concentrate on what they do best i.e.,  EAT. The pitter patter of rain immediately send our hearts thumping with joy. We begin to fantasize about tempting, crispy concoctions that are hard to put down once you start eating. “Pakoras” are all time favorites in the South-East Asia region; Vegetables or chicken pieces coated with a generous amount of deliciously spiced gram flour and then fried. You can’t possibly fathom a nice rainy evening sitting on the front porch without a heap of sizzling pakoras on your plate. Another delicious snack from the pakora clan is the well-known “Samosa”. Thin flour rotis wrapped over minced meat, veges, cheese etc. Now places that boast of the best tasting pakoras & samosas are situated in the inner city of Lahore. Places like Data Darbar, Gawaal Mandi, Liberty have some of the oldest and finest little establishments offering these sinful treats.

Pakoras being made in the Data Darbar area (Lahore)

Some of the best Pakoras in the city - Data Darbar area (Lahore)

Runners up in the list of tantalizing appetizers on any typical rainy day are hot syrupy jalebis, namak paaray and well…like I said earlier, If you’re in Lahore then there will always an endless list of delicious foods to soothe your taste buds!

Kick that bad mood with some juicy red meat!

Did you get up on the wrong side of the bed today (or if there’s a wall on one side, just play along will you:p)? Is your day not going as planned? Is dinner time a complete bummer when you see watery lentils swimming in a sea of yellowy water begging an escape? Well don’t you worry because here’s the tossdown lifesaving mantra for a day just like that!!! Gorge down some scrumptious, juicy, meat from Arizona Grill!!! Meat that cuts through like butter but tastes so amazingly chewy and flavorful its just wrong not to indulge yourself. And did I mention the Mash Potatoes!!? The most perfectly delectable potato mush I have ever had. The buttery, garlicky flavour is such a beautiful memory, I just want to lock it in my happy place. Sigh.

So before you even think of ruining a perfectly nice day because of a few crummy events, think again!!!

and the step mom bids farewell…..

We at tossdown have a confession to make. While busily scurrying around town (and well other cities of the country too) like madmen and women trying to make tossdown the king of all eatout portals in the country, we unfortunately assumed the role of the long-familiar step mom of the movies who almost always ends up ignoring her step child, which in our case was our poor little blog.  This we desperately needed to get out of the system because a guilty conscience is just not cut out for this sort of grueling work. To the tossdown team, if you are all reading this, you are free to collectively sigh with relief!! We have officially been given penance. Its time to get down to some serious scribbling because there is  just so much to write about and well lets just say we don’t want another episode of the horrible step mom creeping up now do we….?!

A lot has been happening. Facebook, with its complete invasion of our lives, has been the perfect little boy scout by helping tossdown cross the street and get down to some serious interaction with the public. By introducing new and tempting competitions, we have opened the gateway to our ever-excited, hyper younger generation that is always looking for ways to satiate their hunger for “FUN” & “FOOD”.  Our discount privilege cards have gathered a pretty decent (modesty is one of our greatest virtues if you haven’t noticed already) number of restaurants among the city’s better if not best eateries. Tossdown events at schools, colleges, expos, shopping malls etc. have given a great boost to our portal. This of course is a really small list of our current happenings and the rest of the ‘Top-Secret’ stuff shall be disclosed when the time is right. After all, with such teeth-clenching , aggressive competition these days, its better to secretly tip-toe around the market until you’re absolutely ready to pounce with your new found strategy and ideas.

tossdown.com

I think its time we introduced you to our tossdown team. How does that sound? Alright in the coming issues be sure to catch the tossdown team hard at work and well in our jargon, hard at food. We’ll keep  you loyal tossdowners updated with all that is happening in the big, beautiful world of “Food & Eating out”!!

Till next time,

Happy eating and before you go, here’s a penny for your thoughts:

Next time you eat out and decide to leave a big portion of your meal untouched because you’re either watching your weight, or you’re out with friends who would make fun of your massive appetite, think twice. Its better to grab a doggy bag on your way out and hand it over to the nearest deserving and hungry person, than wasting all that good food :). I learnt this from an expert and so should you;)
